The Manifesto

Before matches, before lighters, people kept embers. At night, they could not simply let it burn. A fire left open would spend itself too quickly. It might blaze for a while, then leave nothing useful by morning. So they changed how the fire was kept. They lowered the flame. They gathered the embers, covered them in ash, and kept enough heat alive for morning. This was called banking a fire. It did not end the night. It did not remove the cold. It did not make the fire larger than it was. It kept the fire from becoming ash. That is the banked fire at the center of Emberosis. A fire does not have to burn at full intensity to still be alive. Sometimes what looks quiet is not dead. It is being carried through conditions that would consume it if it stayed exposed.
